Drei Freunde Bar – Hamburg

Drei Freunde Bar - Hamburg found at The Pouring Tales

This bar was suggested to me by the friendly barkeepers at The Walrus. It is not far from it close to Reeperbahn. That said I think you can have a great time in this place. You enter at a corner of a street and you find the bar on the left side of the room. If you continue straight on and you walk up a few steps you find small tables to hang out. Quite cosy up there and with good music you can enjoy some of the rather creative cocktails. When I was there it was late and the bar only had a few guests on a Thursday night. I sat at the usual place – the counter of course. Female power reigns behind the bar which is something you do not find very often so I was pleasantly surprised. Good spirit selection, wide range of material, especially the variety of glasses. What is a bit annoying is the far too bright light in one of the fridges behind the bar. Why its there? I am sure it has its right to exist but its definitely not wisely chosen as it almost hurts your eyes.

Beetroot Old Fashioned at Drei Freunde Bar in Hamburg

Beetroot Old Fashioned

Nobody might realise it when the place is packed but later at night it is definitely disturbing. The glasses I mentioned earlier are almost countless and one wonders if the bar can really get that packed. It might, so I don’t want to judge too harshly. The lamps at the counter are stylish though the green walls rather needs getting used to. Coming back to the essentials. Water service comes in form of a whole bottle. Quite practical, especially at this time of the day. I was happy to get my own to refill my glass. Smoking is allowed in the bar which I am sure some see as a plus. I did not know that but a bartender told me that in Hamburg, dunno if it is all over Germany, if you only have one room for the bar you can basically decide if you want to make it smoking or non smoking. I had a quick look at the menu and opted for something that sounded interesting but it is also something that is not easy to work with. Beetroot! The drink is called Rote Rübe, which is word by word translated Red Carrot. What they mean though is beetroot. It was going into the direction of an Old Fashioned. Rye, Angostura, Celeriac, Sugar syrup and topped with an espuma made from beetroot and horseradish. The drink was very nicely presented on a wooden platter and some edible decoration on the side. The composition was rather spicy, the espuma quite heavy and strong in taste. For me it was overpowering. I don’ know the exact method they did the espuma with, but eggwhite i presume as it looked non appetizing after 2 minutes and was spoiling the drink. I would go back and check out some more drinks and definitely give it another chance on a more crowded night, though I am not the biggest fan as judging by the size of the bar, quality of drinks can rapidly decrease in a crowded place. Nevertheless it was interesting to see and you definitely would not expect such creativity when you walk in.
